Websites and web hosting can be very confusing because you hear words that you have never heard before.
Let's go through some of the common ones.

I.P. Address:
(Internet Protocol Address) This is heard quite often and is what drives he foundation of the Internet. Every Website, computer or device connected to the Internet has an I.P. address.
This may sound strange but without them, you would not be able to use the Internet from a device. An I.P. address typically looks like this: (27.873.73.1).
When your home modem connects to the Internet, your Internet Provider assigns your modem an I.P. address and only after this is done can you connect to the Internet.

Domain name (Web Address):
This is an easy one and I hope you already know it. A Domain Name is a Website address like abc.net.au or gmail.com.
Domain names makes it easier to find the websites that we want. When you enter a domain name into your web browser. That domain is looked up in a directory (kind of) to find where on the internet it is located. The directory returns an I.P. address and then your computer knows where to go.
Think of it as a speed dial for a phone number.

Subdomain:
Subdomains are variants on your domain name. It comes before the domain name. For example a subdomain of abc.net.au could be radio.abc.net.au . The information comes from the same location but it allows you to create an entirely different Website with just one domain name.
Your hosting package allows you to create a certain number of subdomains depending on the package you choose.

Web Hosting:
Web Hosting is renting space to 'Host' a Website. You rent some hard disk space from a Web Hosting Provider (like us) to place your Website.
These hard disks are located in servers (computers) specifically designed to hold Websites. They have special software to achieve this purpose. Just like the software that makes your phone work.

Hosting Control Panel:
The control panel has all the settings and features of your Website. Within the control panel you can create subdomains, email accounts and check the usage of your disk space and Bandwidth. Different hosting providers use a variety of control panels. Each of which have there own set of features to make your hosting experience easier.

Bandwidth\Disk Space:
When you have a hosting account, you buy a set Disk Space and Bandwidth limit. Disk Space is the amount of physical space on a hard disk like (500 Megabytes). Just like your computer, you can only fit so much data on it. Web Hosting is no different. Bandwidth is the amount of data transferred when your web page is viewed or you upload/download data to and from it. It works the same way as the data limit on your mobile phone plan or home internet plan. You are only allowed so much data to download. Typically, Websites do not use much bandwidth unless you have thousands of visitors to your Website.

SSL:
(Secure Socket Layer) is a method of transmitting data between your Web Browser and the Website you are viewing.
When you visit a Website with SSL enabled, the Website created a secure encrypted connection so that any data you submit can not be intercepted. When you are shopping online or Banking, check that you can see a little padlock symbol in the address bar (the place where you type in the domain name) or a green address bar (all banks should have this type). A quick way to check is the address of the site. It should be https://sitename.com and not http://sitename.com. Notice the 's' in the 'http'. It means secure.
This Website is SSL enabled and you will notice the little padlock next to the address(domain name).
